BROMLEY DIRECTORIES HELD

During the final years of Queen Victoria's reign, and into the early part of the 20th Century, there were 3 companies competing with each other in this area, being Kelly's, Bush's & Strong's.

The earliest Kelly's Directory of Bromley held in a public archive is 1888. This volume is the 1st edition. However, working forwards, there somehow appears to be an error in attributing editions. Most of these early volumes are now gone forever.  Only the more modern Bromley directories have the edition printed inside. The earlier ones have only had their edition numbers attributed here by applying logic and working backwards.

3. Kelly's Directory of Bromley 1892-3  (5th edition.) Actually printed inside, so must be correct.

25. Kelly's Directory of Bromley 1940 (56th edition.) 56th edition is printed inside this volume. 1940 minus 56 = 1884, which is wrong. Very strange, (and unlikely, for Kelly's to make mistakes, but it appears that there is an error.)
